Unlock zakar with your fingerprint

A passkey lets you open zakar and your locked notes with Touch ID, Windows Hello, Face ID or your phone’s fingerprint, instead of typing your password.

The short version.

On the web, open Settings → Security & privacy → Device passkey, choose Set up on this browser, confirm your account, then Create device passkey. On Android and iPhone there is nothing to set up: zakar uses your phone’s own fingerprint, face or passcode. Your password, Google or Apple sign-in always works too.

1What you need

  • Mac: Touch ID turned on in System Settings → Touch ID & Password. A Mac without Touch ID can use your iPhone instead when the browser offers a QR code.
  • Windows: Windows Hello (fingerprint, face or PIN) in Settings → Accounts → Sign-in options.
  • Phone or tablet browser: a screen lock with fingerprint, face or passcode.
  • Not supported: private or incognito windows, and most Linux browsers. Use your zakar account there; it always works.

2Set it up on the web

  • Sign in at use.myzakar.app in the browser you want to use.
  • Open Settings → Security & privacy. Under Device passkey, choose Set up on this browser.
  • Confirm it’s you with your zakar password, or with the Google or Apple account you signed in with.
  • Choose Create device passkey within a minute, then touch the sensor or look at the camera.
  • You’ll see Passkey ready. That browser now unlocks with it.

To have zakar lock itself when you step away, turn on Lock zakar on the same page and pick how long it waits.

3On Android and iPhone

The apps use the phone’s own unlock, so there is no passkey to create. Turn on Lock zakar in the app’s settings and it opens with your fingerprint, face or passcode. Locked notes ask for the same, then your zakar account if that doesn’t work. On iPhone, add a passcode in the Settings app first.

4Using it

When zakar is locked, the passkey prompt opens by itself on a browser you set up. On a locked note, choose Unlock with passkey. On a browser you haven’t set up, Try a saved passkey still works if your passwords sync from another device.

5When a passkey won’t work

“This passkey is from an earlier zakar account.”

The passkey was made for a zakar account you had before, often one you deleted and created again with the same email. Unlock once with your password, Google or Apple on that same screen, straight away. zakar then links the passkey to your account, and it opens zakar on that browser from then on. Do this once on each browser that shows the message.

“Your passkey wasn’t available or the prompt was cancelled.”

The prompt was closed, timed out, or this device has no zakar passkey. Try again, or unlock with your account below the button.

The old passkey keeps coming up

Password managers list passkeys by email, so an old and a new one can look the same. Delete the old one for myzakar.app, then set up again from Settings:

  • Mac, iPhone, iPad: the Passwords app → Passkeys.
  • Chrome: Settings → Autofill and passwords → Google Password Manager.
  • Windows: Settings → Accounts → Passkeys.

“Please confirm your account again”

Setup waits one minute after you confirm your account. Confirm again, then choose Create device passkey straight away.

There’s no passkey button

This browser or device has no built-in fingerprint or face unlock, or you’re in a private window. Set up Touch ID or Windows Hello first, or use your zakar account.

You can’t get in at all

Choose Sign out of zakar on the lock screen, then sign in again. Forgot your password? Choose Forgot password? on the sign-in page. Google and Apple accounts use their own recovery. If you use end-to-end encryption, its passphrase is separate from all of this.

6What a passkey does and doesn’t do

Your fingerprint and the passkey itself never leave your device or password manager. zakar only remembers, in that browser, which passkey belongs to your account; nothing about it is stored on our servers or in your notes. A passkey unlocks zakar on your device. Signing in to zakar is still your password, Google or Apple.

Still stuck? Email hello@myzakar.app with your browser, your device, and the message you saw.
